Founded in 1954, Santos has been active in the energy business for more than 60 years.
Santos made its first significant discovery of natural gas in the Cooper Basin with the Gidgealpa 2 well in 1963. The Moomba 1 discovery in 1966 confirmed this region as a major petroleum province.
With origins in the Cooper Basin, Santos has one of the largest exploration and production acreages in Australia and extensive infrastructure. Our strategy is centred on a portfolio of long-life natural gas and LNG assets which spread across Papua New Guinea, Northern Australia, Western Australia, Cooper Basin, Queensland, New South Wales, and Asia. These assets support our aim to be a leading Australian domestic gas supplier and a major LNG exporter supplying clean energy to Asia.
Santos is now Australia’s lowest cost onshore operator, a significant point of differentiation that is not easy to replicate. While Santos is one of Australia’s largest oil and gas companies, it is not so big that individuals get lost in the crowd.
Santos is made up of a diverse group of individuals with different backgrounds, life expectancies and perspectives. We are united by the desire to work on complex challenges with other dedicated, highly skilled professionals who believe our energy solutions can make the world a better place. Our people are smart, resilient, professional and passionate about the industry. We value safety, efficiency and innovation, and continuously strive to deliver outstanding outcomes for all stakeholders. We take personal accountability for delivering on what we promise.
Santos’ values underpin its culture and social license to operate. The values reflect how Santos employees work, treat each other, and how they interact with the people around them. The values that Santos employees strive to uphold in all their interactions include the ability to work as one team, act with integrity, be accountable, pursue exception results and build a better future.
Santos is built on a strong foundation of social responsibility. Embedded in our approach to working with local communities is a commitment to establish and maintain enduring and mutually beneficial relationships. A key part of this is employing locally. Santos employees live and work in many of the communities where we operate and are actively involved in our community programs and activities.
In addition to generating jobs and positive economic benefits through our operations, Santos aims to invest in programs that help local communities thrive. Over the past 10 years, Santos has spent over $200 million supporting thousands of community initiatives. Our community investment programs are guided by five Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) pillars that reflect our business values and provide sustainable benefits to the communities where our people live and work.
The first pillar is of Environment and Climate Change, which underpins Santos’ commitment to protecting the environment and supporting the transition to a clean economy. The second is Regional Communities which involves supporting regional programs that enhance the lives of those who live close to Santos’ operations, a key element to the community investment program. The third pillar is Training and Education which focuses on building industry skills and knowledge as a core focus of Santos’ business. The fourth pillar is Healthy Living which demonstrates Santos’ understanding that a healthy community makes a happy community which is implemented through various support programs that encourage a healthy lifestyle. The fifth and final pillar is of the Indigenous. As Santos is an Australian company, it is committed to working collaboratively with the traditional owners of the land. We support programs that help improve the lives and prosperity of indigenous people.
The GLNG project provided $210 million to upgrade rural roads in regions of Queensland. Santos also provided $10 million to support Indigenous employment, training and education activities.
Santos considers sustainability as an integral part of its conduct. Natural gas is ideally placed to underpin this transition to a lower-carbon economy, as it is a reliable and affordable source of energy that produces 50% less greenhouse gas emissions than coal when used to generate electricity and less local air pollutants.
A sustainable future depends on Australian natural gas, and Santos is proud to play an important role in securing Australia’s economic and environmental future for generations to come.
Santos recognizes the strategic value in recruiting new talent at graduate and student level and provides excellent opportunities for growth and development through our graduate and vacation programs.
