Deloitte is a network of independent firms. These firms offer audit, consulting, financial and risk advisory and tax services to their clients. All these firms brand themselves as part of the Deloitte network and members of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited, a private company based in the UK. As of 2016, the Deloitte network covered over 150 countries and had annual revenues of around US$37 billion.
Deloitte believes maximising diversity and inclusion leads to improved business outcomes. Deloitte Australia runs an ‘Inspiring Women’ program which encourages female staff through talent identification, development, sponsorship and career opportunities. For 13 consecutive years, the business has been recognised as an Employer of Choice for gender equality. Deloitte Australia also has an LGBTI leadership forum and networking group called GLOBE. It coordinates activities, training and awareness sessions.
Deloitte Australia aims to “make an enduring economic, social and cultural contribution that helps to position Australia for prosperity and sustainability”. To further this end, it gave $18 million to not-for-profit organisations in 2016. Deloitte Australia also offers it services pro bono to certain community organisations. Once a year, on ‘Impact Day’, Deloitte Australia staff spend the day working for charities and community organisations. Since 2015, the Deloitte Foundation has been building relationships with community organisations, providing financial and other support to those caught in natural disasters and encouraging Deloitte Australia staff to donate time and money to worthy causes.
Every year Deloitte Australia recruits “a large number of outstanding graduates… to inject new ideas and energy.” As might be expected, those with accounting, actuarial studies, economics, science, IT, engineering, law and maths degrees are welcome to apply. What is not so expected is that those from a range of other disciplines – arts, construction management, engineering, graphic/industrial/interior design, psychology and science are also considered.
There are two intakes, in March and July. See details on Deloitte Australia's full recruitment process.
The grad development program is called D|Academy. D|Academy runs an onboarding process that involves soft skills and technical training to prepare new hires for life at a professional services firm. Grads are then paired up with a buddy and coach to help them get up and running as soon as possible. All those in the grad program receive mentoring, peer support and e-learning resources. Those in working in the relevant business units are also supported as they complete the Chartered Accountants Program or Masters of Tax. Once a year, there is an event called Breakthrough, where all those in the Deloitte Australia’s grad program are gathered together to celebrate their progress with their peers and network with partners from all business units.
Like other members of the Big Four, Deloitte Australia pays modest starting salaries and doesn’t commonly give those in the grad program bonuses. However, once you’ve finished the grad program your remuneration will be regularly reviewed against industry benchmarks. You’ll also be able to apply for local and overseas secondments and have your relocation costs covered if you’re successful. Other benefits include discounted insurance cover, a range of leave benefits including access to study leave, and discounts on technological devices, banking and finance products, vehicles and travel. There are also plenty of opportunities and support to undertake professional development as well as access to flexible working arrangements.
You can work in multiple business areas and several different countries at Deloitte. If you work hard and exhibit the appropriate technical and interpersonal skills you can expect to be regularly promoted.
Deloitte’s culture is based on “inclusion, collaboration, high performance and opportunity”. It’s also often described as “a playful culture with serious intent” which basically means you can expect to work and play hard.
