The Deloitte story

Deloitte is a network of independent firms. These firms offer audit, consulting, financial and risk advisory and tax services to their clients. All these firms brand themselves as part of the Deloitte network and members of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited, a private company based in the UK. As of 2016, the Deloitte network covered over 150 countries and had annual revenues of around US$37 billion.

The culture

Deloitte believes maximising diversity and inclusion leads to improved business outcomes. Deloitte Australia runs an ‘Inspiring Women’ program which encourages female staff through talent identification, development, sponsorship and career opportunities. For 13 consecutive years, the business has been recognised as an Employer of Choice for gender equality. Deloitte Australia also has an LGBTI leadership forum and networking group called GLOBE. It coordinates activities, training and awareness sessions.

Social contribution

Deloitte Australia aims to “make an enduring economic, social and cultural contribution that helps to position Australia for prosperity and sustainability”. To further this end, it gave $18 million to not-for-profit organisations in 2016. Deloitte Australia also offers it services pro bono to certain community organisations. Once a year, on ‘Impact Day’, Deloitte Australia staff spend the day working for charities and community organisations. Since 2015, the Deloitte Foundation has been building relationships with community organisations, providing financial and other support to those caught in natural disasters and encouraging Deloitte Australia staff to donate time and money to worthy causes.

The recruitment process

Every year Deloitte Australia recruits “a large number of outstanding graduates… to inject new ideas and energy.” As might be expected, those with accounting, actuarial studies, economics, science, IT, engineering, law and maths degrees are welcome to apply. What is not so expected is that those from a range of other disciplines – arts, construction management, engineering, graphic/industrial/interior design, psychology and science are also considered.

There are two intakes, in March and July.  See details on Deloitte Australia's full recruitment process

The grad development program is called D|Academy. D|Academy runs an onboarding process that involves soft skills and technical training to prepare new hires for life at a professional services firm. Grads are then paired up with a buddy and coach to help them get up and running as soon as possible. All those in the grad program receive mentoring, peer support and e-learning resources. Those in working in the relevant business units are also supported as they complete the Chartered Accountants Program or Masters of Tax. Once a year, there is an event called Breakthrough, where all those in the Deloitte Australia’s grad program are gathered together to celebrate their progress with their peers and network with partners from all business units.

Remuneration

Like other members of the Big Four, Deloitte Australia pays modest starting salaries and doesn’t commonly give those in the grad program bonuses. However, once you’ve finished the grad program your remuneration will be regularly reviewed against industry benchmarks. You’ll also be able to apply for local and overseas secondments and have your relocation costs covered if you’re successful. Other benefits include discounted insurance cover, a range of leave benefits including access to study leave, and discounts on technological devices, banking and finance products, vehicles and travel. There are also plenty of opportunities and support to undertake professional development as well as access to flexible working arrangements.

Career prospects

You can work in multiple business areas and several different countries at Deloitte. If you work hard and exhibit the appropriate technical and interpersonal skills you can expect to be regularly promoted.

The vibe of the place

Deloitte’s culture is based on “inclusion, collaboration, high performance and opportunity”. It’s also often described as “a playful culture with serious intent” which basically means you can expect to work and play hard.

From the employer:

About Deloitte

Deloitte leads with purpose and innovation. Constantly challenging the status quo to solve complex issues for their clients and Australian communities.

They inspire, value and support their people in their working and personal lives so that together they can shape a better future.

Deloitte is looking for people to join them who have a passion to make an impact that matters. Sound like you? Then ask, what impact will you make?

As one of the largest professional services firms in the world, the services they offer are as diverse as the graduates and interns they hire. From cybersecurity and tech innovation through to accounting and advisory, they’re looking ahead and building industries of the future.

That’s why they don’t just employ students, they nurture them throughout their career.

Purpose-led Work

Deloitte was awarded Silver in the best Pro Bono and Workplace Volunteering category of the 2018 Workplace Giving Excellence Awards.

Deloitte is a purpose-led company. When they talk about impact, it’s not just about helping their clients but making a lasting and positive impact on the community and world at large.

They are motivated by a purpose that transcends profits, which is why they give their employees the time, energy and opportunities to give back through initiatives such as the Deloitte Foundation and annual Impact Day.

Their commitment to making a true impact last year saw:

  • A record 4,013 Deloitte Australia employees volunteered at 412 charity events across Australia, PNG and the Solomon Islands!
  • Deloitte provided $11.76 million worth of pro bono work in the financial year 2017-18 (+30% from FY17)
  • Deloitte recognised as a winner for Community Contribution in the Australian Business Awards for their pro bono program. And recognised by the AFR as the standout provider of pro bono services: "Not surprisingly the big four accounting firms have contributed the most dedicated time to pro bono activities, with Deloitte the standout." What Graduates Say About Them
  • Great progressive, modern culture and comprehensive training programs.
  • The people are truly amazing and welcoming.
  • I get to walk in to work looking forward to what I will be doing today. I am kept busy everyday doing things that I like doing. I am not asked to do work that people know are boring. If I am ever stuck with work, my team is happy to help me or give me tips. I feel like I am learning everyday with great support.
  • Great people to work with, awesome graduate program and clients
  • Being able to work on a vast range of projects to get experience across multiple areas before deciding what to specialise in.
  • In the beginning, I felt like there wasn't much expectations as a grad and there was days where I didn't have work from my own team. That made work very boring. But I later figured that I was just given freedom to work on stuff that I wanted to learn. So I started trying to learn things myself and approached other teams I am interested in for some work. I now do interesting work for different teams and feel like I am actually helping.
  • Consulting often requires you to work long hours without getting paid overtime.
  • IT doesn't support Macs very well.
  • Emails, there are so many emails to deal with.
  • The lack of firm supported social team events. Due to the case base nature of investigations, at times you can feel underutilised in the quieter (although infrequent) times.
