Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 7 million people who take injustice personally and Amnesty International Australia is one of Australia’s largest not for profit organisations. We are an independent, global movement that campaigns courageously for human rights for everyone.
We live in a challenging time for human rights. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people are killed during conflicts and crises, while millions more are left needing protection and support.
Around the world, countries are responding to this uncertainty by cracking down on human rights – often in the name of protecting public order or ending terrorism.
This is why we get out of bed in the morning, go to countless rallies, have tough conversations and write hundreds of letters – because we believe that together, we can create a world where our most basic human rights are enjoyed by all.
Amnesty International Australia works closely with Indigenous communities and people seeking asylum to fight discrimination, unfair detention and to demand safety and a fair justice system for all. We also have a very active women’s and LGBTIQ activist networks campaigning on important gender and sexuality issues.
Ultimately, we put pressure on the Australian government to adopt laws that respect the human rights of all our citizens and to meet our international human rights obligations.
