Graduate at NSW Government

It is just as valuable to learn that you don’t like something, as learning about something you love.

What attracted you to the NSW Government Graduate Program?

I always knew I wanted to start my career in policy, because I believe it’s where all the toughest questions about society’s most prevalent problems are being answered. I wanted somewhere I could develop my critical and strategic thinking skills, because most other skills you can learn on the job. I also wanted a graduate program that offered diverse experiences, because I wasn’t sure what was out there and needed a taster of everything so the three rotations really appealed to me.

What advice would you give a graduate who is thinking about applying for the Program?

Just do it! There are so many opportunities with the grad program that your interests and goals can change once you dive into something new. If you don’t know exactly what kind of role you want, that’s the whole point of the grad program –you can try a bit of everything.

What is your current job title and in which Department or agency within the NSW Government sector are you currently placed?

I am currently a policy officer in the Commercial and Finance Team at Telco Authority, which is based at the Department of Finance, Services and Innovation.

What value have you drawn from your mentor and sponsor relationships?

As a grad who is just starting out in the public sector workforce, I couldn’t possibly know about all the projects and initiatives in state government so my mentor has been valuable in helping me navigate the maze that is NSW Government. The mentoring relationship is a two-way street – I am very open about what I am interested in so my mentor can provide me with more specific information. I’ve gained many contacts from her and our catch ups have led to opportunities I would otherwise have no idea about. My advice for making the most of your mentoring relationship is just to be open and honest about your passions and interests.

What is the best professional advice you have ever been given that you would like others to know about?

It is just as valuable to learn that you don’t like something, as learning about something you love. Especially in the current working environment where there are new innovations that constantly allow for new professions, there’s a lot out there that you could be interested in.

What is the best thing about finishing full-time study?

The freedom to do whatever I want! I had so many interests that I couldn’t pursue during uni, because of money or time constraints (most often both). Now, especially with the flexible work policies in NSW Government, I can actually enjoy my time off by doing what I love and pursuing those other passions.

What do you do for fun on the weekend?

In the summer, I love to go to a quiet beach and read before hanging out with my friends in the evening. In the cooler months, I enjoy a long brunch or a walk along one of Sydney’s beautiful trails.

Where is your favourite hangout in NSW?

I enjoy a quiet weekend reading on one of Sydney's harbour beaches, or a catch up over brunch and good coffee with my friends in Surry Hills.

What is your go to move on the dancefloor?

I love a bit of salsa dancing!
