Alex

Graduate at NSW Government

I am very thankful that I was successfully able to land this role, and play a part in the valuable work that the NSW Government undertakes.

What attracted you to the NSW Government Graduate Program?

I wanted to work in a place where I would be able to use and continue to develop my critical thinking skills, whilst also making a positive tangible impact on the wider community. So far, I’ve had some amazing opportunities to do this.

What advice would you give a graduate who is thinking about applying for the Program?

That they most definitely should! I wasn’t particularly aware of much of the work that goes on in the NSW Public Service prior to applying (and I still learn more about it each day). I am very thankful that I was successfully able to land this role, and play a part in the valuable work that the NSW Government undertakes. Future candidates shouldn’t be put off from applying if they don’t have a typical business, economics or law degree. So many of my fellow grads have diverse university backgrounds, which is celebrated by managers for providing a unique perspective on public policy outcomes.

What is your current job title and in which Department or agency within the NSW Government sector are you currently placed?

Department of Finance, Services and Innovation (DFSI). I am currently working within the office of the secretary.

What is the current focus of what you are working on?

Creating strategies to improve the delivery and management of projects within DFSI. This involves a great deal of project work. I am eager to learn new skills in this role.

What value have you drawn from your mentor and sponsor relationships?

Perspective. My mentors actively want to share their knowledge and experience gained from their careers. The value in this is that we as grads can learn from their stories, and gain tips from their wisdom so as to better our own careers.

What is the best thing about finishing full-time study?

Freedom from exams!

Where is your favourite hangout in NSW?

I do enjoy going for a drive, so driving through the Royal National Park south of Cronulla, or driving through the Kangaroo Valley are two of my favourites. I also love spending time at many of the harbour beaches during summer.
