The Leidos Australia Story

Leidos makes the world safer, healthier and more efficient through information technology, engineering and science. It’s work that matters, and a mission they are passionate about. As a large scale prime systems and services integrator, Leidos turns complex data into practical, usable solutions for our customers. In practical terms, they are Australia’s largest commercial supplier of intelligence services to the Australian Intelligence Community. They maintain legislative websites for governments, provide critical systems integration projects to the Department of Defence and support the IT environment for the Australian Taxation Office.

The Culture

No matter who you are or where you work, Leidos has made it a key business goals to ensure everyone feels welcome, valued, respected and supported. It’s about understanding and recognising that everyone is unique and central to building a great place to work. This is reflected in the organisation’s values::

  • Integrity
  • Inclusion
  • Innovation
  • Agility
  • Collaboration
  • Commitment

Social Contribution

Leidos has practical partnerships with two key organisations in Australia. Bravery Trust provides financial support to veterans, current and former members of the Australian Defence Force and their families. The company also collaborates with the Australian War Memorial in Canberra to create a series of augmented reality experiences bringing to life the stories of Australians at war by creating a never-before-seen perspective of key objects from across Australia’s military history. Additionally, many people also organise local fundraising events such as golf days and trivia nights for causes they believe passionately in.

The recruitment process

The process starts with an online application where candidates will be asked to answer some questions and attach a copy of their resume and other supporting documentation. Once reviewed, successful candidates are invited to complete an online capability assessment which entails a series of questions related to the role they’ve applied to. For example, if you’ve applied to a software engineer role then the questions are going to focus on your problem solving skills and how you collaborate with others.

The question formats will include a mix of written responses and potentially at least 1 video submission. We’ve gone for a mix to try give each candidate an opportunity to showcase their strengths while keeping our screening stages fast and fair.

When it comes to what we’re looking for, across our early careers roles we are mostly focusing on your passion for technology and solving really challenging problems.

Finally, successful candidates will be invited to attend a face to face interview with a hiring manager and a representative from the recruitment team. These face to face interviews will take place in either Canberra or Melbourne offices. After a successful interview, there are background checks, and then offers are sent out.

Applications open late February and close early to mid-April. The recruitment and selection process will commence as soon as applicants submit their online capability assessment. Invites to the final stage face to face interviews will only start to go out after the application close date with expectation of interviews taking place in May. The intended grad program start date is for February 2021 however we are often able to accommodate an earlier start.

Remuneration

Pay and benefits are important considerations in any career decision. So Leidos aims to deliver a robust rewards package that not only provides remuneration appropriate to your role and contribution but helps ensure your physical and mental wellbeing too. This includes being assigned a mentor to guide and support you through your early career.

Career prospects

At the end of the 12 month program, Leidos graduates transition into roles across the company based on their strengths & aspirations and the needs of the business.

The vibe of the place

Leidos is passionate about the fact that its work is not just interesting and challenging, but benefits Australia as a country. Innovation is a key value and central to the ethos, and change is constant. So there’s plenty of scope to think differently, develop and learn in an environment that’s both supportive and constantly evolving.

What Graduates Say About Them
  • Supportive managers, friendly team, flexible start/finish times
  • Everyone is very welcoming and want you to succeed.
  • The flexibility of work hours is simply amazing. The benefits to your health not having to wake up and panic + rush out the door in the morning can't be overstates in my opinion. It really makes anything you need to do outside of work so much easier to factor into your week when you know you can work around your commitments.
  • Learning new things, feeling like the project/s that I am working on are important and meaningful.
  • The ability to up-skill easily and move around and try different projects.
  • So many opportunities and areas for growth
  • A lot of sitting at screens
  • Prior disconnect from industry standard wages (rectified somewhat now)
  • I haven't really had any truly negative experiences yet, I think the only negativity I've had was regarding some of the ways policy was conveyed. I felt like it was a little bit babying, like I wasn't capable of understanding basic rules. But that was from outside of my working team so was a very small aspect of my experience here.
  • Work pace can sometimes vary
  • The corporate culture can be a little uptight. Less agile than other smaller software companies.
  • You can't tell people what you're working on due to security clearance
