Our story

Every day we support millions of Australians from all demographics, backgrounds and ages. When you join our department you’ll help deliver more than $173 billion in payments. We offer a range of health, social and welfare payments and services through:

  • Centrelink
  • Child Support
  • Medicare

We touch the lives of almost every Australian. Our department provides essential payments and services to help people meet life's challenges. We help when people have lost a job, a loved one or when they're separating from a partner.

The services we deliver make a difference in the lives of the people we serve.

Our culture

Our department is committed to providing a working environment that values diversity and inclusion, and that supports all employees to reach their full potential. Our commitment is demonstrated through workplace diversity and inclusion strategies, policies and initiatives. Our team would be happy to talk with you about our RecruitAbility scheme available to candidates who identify as having a disability and our Affirmative Measures recruitment process for candidates who identify as being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Australians.

We are committed to creating a workplace culture that builds respect and fosters inclusion. We acknowledge the skills and perspectives that people may bring to the workplace because of their age, language, ethnicity, cultural background, disability, religious belief, sexual orientation, gender identity, intersex status and work and life experiences.
National Graduate Program

Our 10-month program offers 2 pathways – Generalist and Professional.

Our graduate program also has 2 unique experiences. All graduates take part in our Outbound experience. You’ll spend 3 days working in a local service centre or Smart Centre. You’ll see how the work we do makes a positive difference in the lives of Australians. You can also apply for the Indigenous and Multicultural Placement. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you to spend up to 3 months working in an indigenous or multicultural community.

Generalist pathway
Our Generalist pathway accepts applicants with degrees from all disciplines and gives you broad exposure to the operations of the department. You’ll experience 2 placements, each lasting 5 months. This allows you to participate in diverse projects and learn how different areas operate.

Professional pathway
The Professional pathway provides a single placement, allowing you to specialise and develop your skills in a particular area. This year, we are recruiting 6 disciplines within the Professional pathway:

  • communication
  • data analytics
  • finance
  • human resources
  • legal
  • social work
