Harry Khawaja

Associate Professional: Project Management at DXC Technology Australia

I am part of our Project Management community and my day to day activities include delivering small-medium infrastructure & application projects for our clients.

What's your job about?

DXC Technology is amongst the largest IT service provider. I am part of our Project Management community and my day to day activities include delivering small-medium infrastructure & application projects for our clients.

Part of my daily tasks range from client meetings, status reporting on projects, resolving issues, keeping up to date with my resources, tracking & measuring my projects in terms of scope, time and finances.

What's your background?

I was born and raised in Pakistan. Migrated to Perth where I spent several years, finished my Tertiary education before moving to Sydney to experience the big city life. This is where I started to take job hunting seriously and was offered a graduate position with DXC.

I started out as a finance analyst providing support, training to Project Managers on consulting and infrastructure projects and programs. A year into this role, I was offered the opportunity to relocate to QLD as a Junior Project Manager. I have since been engaged in my current role and am gaining invaluable experience while delivering my own projects.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

I came from a finance/accounting background and let me assure you it was not the easiest jumping into IT. I believe my current role requires experience and of course background would have helped but it is not essential. I have worked alongside many senior managers, who have come from different backgrounds, and have mastered the trade through experience.

Since you get to engage with people from around the globe, you need to ensure that there is clarity in your communication so everyone can be on the same page. Your soft skills are important.

I believe having a friendly, calm and collective attitude earns respect from other team members.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

Every project is unique and presents a different challenge. I enjoy being part of a focused group and achieving goals.

Positive feedback from the client after a successful project is music to your ears. This makes all the difficulties you and your team had to go through to reach the end goal worth it.

What are the limitations of your job?

While managing project delivery, you are responsible for the actions of your team. You are usually the focal/key point of contact for all stakeholders on your project. It can be very stressful at times especially when you are managing multiple projects at a time or are engaged in big programs of work. My job does require long hours and at times, weekend work.

I am working towards improving my time management skills which I believe will make me more efficient.

The biggest limitation can be finding the right person to help guide you at a crucial moment.
